Smol2Swol Publishing
The first installment in the Mr Marshmallow Extended Universe is out! "Mr. Marshmallow Makes Friends on the Moon" is available on Amazon and in all branches of the Howard County Public Libraries.
In 2026, S2S diversified our purrtfolio to include formal publi-cat-ions beyond our Annual Mewsletter. Our Grraphics Dept and Nommunications staff teamed up to author and illustrate the first Smol2Swol Story, "Mr. Marshmallow Makes Friends on the Moon". The collaboration was very successful, despite Mr. Marshmallow's repeated attempts to eat the Grraphics Dept's art supplies, and the team is continuing to develop more stories. Other titles in purrogress include the following:
- Mr. Marshmallow and the Windy Day, in which Theodore Roosevelt and Mr. Marshmallow take a class of foster kittens for a field trip to the local park. There they discover a creature in need and figure out how to help. Parents can discuss with their young readers how everyone, no matter how small, can help others.
- Life is Hard for Mr. Marshmallow (expected publication in early 2027) in which we see the deep chasm between Mr. Marshmallow's over-ambitiously big dreams and his small life, and he learns to appreciate the life that he has.
- Mr. Marshmallow and the Midnight Monster in which Uncle Teddy, Uncle Marshmallow, and their class of foster kittens have to investigate a thump in the night. In this twist on the parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant, each cat sees a different piece of the monster and jumps to the conclusion that it's a different scary creature. It takes Mr. Marshmallow overcoming his fear and calmly looking at the situation to discover that it's just a visiting forest friend!
- Mr. Marshmallow and the Perfect Nap, in which Theodore Roosevelt and Mr. Marshmallow grow dissatisfied with their well-worn co-sleeping bed and go in search of better places to nap by themselves, only to discover that napping with your best friend is better than any plush cushion.
- Mr. Marshmallow, where's the Baby?, in which Mr. Marshmallow must put himself into a foster kitten's shoes (paws?) to locate her after she disappears in the house. Parents can discuss with their young readers the importance of empathy and understanding that other people might see, think, and make decisions differently than you do.
- The Dream Guardians: a Smol2Swol story, in which Theodore Roosevelt and Mr. Marshmallow teach a litter of foster kittens how to be good companions to their forever families. They learn that kitties sleep near their people's heads in order to guard their dreams
Our Philosophy
Smol2Swol Stories emphasize joyful, whimsical storytelling that gives young readers and their grownups lots to talk about, while avoiding heavy-handed or preachy lessons.
The books are designed to support early readers in as many ways as possible, guided by Dr. Jackson's formal training in the Lab for the Neurodevelopment of Reading and Language at the University of Maryland.
